If you were around in 2010, I was posting this album form Segun Adewale & Shina Peters. A year later I was doing an edit for the dancefloor ( with my mate Chylo) of one of the track of this album "Oba oyebade lipede". My friends from Hard Fist Label issue it for free download on there soundcloud page...

Great Juju stuff from the end of the seventies. (Thanks to Groovemonzter for the info) Segun Adewale and Shina Peters were young musicians playing with General Prince Adekunle in 1977 when they decided to form their own band, "Sir Shina Adwale & the Superstars International." During the next three years they released nine albums. The album posted here was their sixth. The sound here is really intersting. You'll hear a beat box in the last song, "oba oyebade lipede"  is just amazing.

Excellent album de Juju de la fin des années 70. Segun Adewale et Shina Peters étaient musiciens au sein de l'orchestre de Prince Adekunle, un des maîtres du genre. En 1977 ils montent leur propre groupe et, en trois ans, pondent 9 albums. Celui-ci est le 6e. Le son est plutôt étonnant dans la mesure ou vous pourrez entendre, outre les synthés psychés, une boite à rythme...

Chief Bukka & his cultural group of Okrika (LP, Willysco Records, 1980)

Traditionnal music from the Okrika people recorded in 1980. Okrika is a port near Port Harcour in the Niger delta, it used to be one of the biggest slave port in the 18th century. It's now one the more polluted place in Nigeria because of the oil industry. This traditional music is really different from Juju or Fuji, it's the only LP I got from this kind of music. Prince Adekunle & his Western State Brothers - MOLP 3 - Vol 2 (LP,Nigeria, Ibukun Orisun Iye Records,early 70s)

Prince Adekunle, in my opinion, is one of the most interresting musician in Nigerian Juju music. He's was born in Abeokuta in Ogun State, south-western of Nigeria. He has spent most of his carreer in the Ibukun Orisun Iye label. This album is the second of his discography and was recorded at the beggining of the seventies. The sound is quiet different than musicians like Ebenezer Obey or Kung Sunny Ade. His voice is very sweet, as the voices arrangements behind him are. Some kind of "gospel" feeling. I don't speak Yoruba, but I can easily imagine that the songs are litte stories of every day life built with local proverbs, as often with Adekunle, praises to a local notable or, as it seems to be on the B side, to members of his familly....If you speak Yoruba, and like to translate, you're welcome !

Prince Adekunle est un des musiciens favoris dans l'univers, riche et complexe, de la musique Juju. Il ne sonne pas du tout comme d'autres maîtres du genre, King Sunny Ade et autre Ebenezer Obey. J'aime beaucoup sa voix très claire ou encore les arrangements de voix derrière lui qui ont quelque chose proche du gospel. Il a beaucoup influencé la jeune garde du Juju début seventies, Shina Peters tout comme Segun Adewale ont démarré dans son orchestre. Je ne parle malheureusement pas Yoruba, cette langue qui chante tellement, mais j'imagine très bien qu'il raconte de petites histoires de tous les jours, mêlées de proverbes locaux, de louanges à certains notables, ou encore à des membres de sa famille si l'on en croit l'un des titres de la face B. Si un lecteur parle Yoruba et se prend l'envie de traduire, il est le bien venu !

Adeolu Akinsanya (Baba Eto) & The Western Toppers Band (LP,Nigeria, Afrodisia, 1983)

Great and typical nigerian highlife here ! I don't know much about Baba Eto, it's seems to me that he is singing on few Rex Lawson albums...Anyway, this LP is great and as on every nigerian highlife stuff, there's a really interresting work between the singer and the drums, specially the talking drums. You never know who talk first, the singer or the drummer ? The date on this copy is 1983, but it sounds like a last sixties highlife album. Recorded for the great Afrodisia label.

Excellent album de highlife nigérian. Je ne sais pas grand chose de Baba Eto, si ce n'est qu'il me semble qu'il chante sur une paire d'albums de Rex Lawson. Quoi qu'il en soit, le voici en leader dans une formation typique du highlife nigérian, avec beaucoup de place laissée aux percussions, batterie et autres talking drums. J'aime beaucoup le jeu d'appel/réponse entre le chanteur et la rythmique justement. On ne sait jamais qui parle en premier, qui répond à qui...Et comme toujours dans le highlife nigérian, le batteur en met partout...L'album est daté de 1983 alors qu'il sonne comme un disque des la fin des sixties, le tout enregistré sur l'un des meilleurs labels nigérians, Afrodisia.

Ebenezer Obey and his International Bros "A Christmas special by the king of Juju" (LP, Waps, Obey)

Still Nigeria with one of the most important traditionnal music in the afrobeat rythmic....Tony Allen, when he's back to Nigeria, always go to Juju concert, he was saying to me one time that his job, as an afrobeat drummer, was to be able to reproduct the polyrythmic stuff of a juju band but alone....  So let's laugh with The king of Juju, mister Ebenezer Obey. As the title speak for himself, this is a record for christmas, so merry christmas... Obey and his musicians are playing great  Juju songs wtih, incrusted in, Christmas melodies. The result is really funny. I really dig the call and response game between Obey and the other guitarist...The langage is Yoruba.

On reste au Nigeria avec une des musiques les plus importantes dans la construction rythmique de l'afrobeat, en l'occurence le Juju (je dis le, mais je ne sais pas si c'est masculin ou féminin, par contre à ma connaissance, aucune femme ne chante le juju...). Tony Allen, dans une interview, me disait qu'à chaque fois qu'il rentrait au pays, il allait écouter des groupes de juju pour garder le lien avec cette musique et que son boulot était de reproduire la polyrythmie de la section rythmique d'un orchestre de juju, mais seul...Pensez-y la prochaine fois que vous allez le voir en concert, quand on le regarde faire, ça parait évident...Bref, l'album d’aujourd’hui porte tout à fait bien son nom. Après Nat King Cole et son album de Noël, voici celui d'Ebenezer Obey et sa bande de joyeux lurons, je sais que l'on est en janvier, mais on s'en fout... C'est du juju des familles avec, incrusté entre les chansons, des airs de Noël que l'on connait tous. En gros, toutes les deux minutes ils balancent une mélodie genre "Jingle bells" en mode : on la joue à deux guitares qui se répondent, on la double à la voix, on envoie les choeurs gospel-chaloupés et on repart sur un truc juju-psychédélique-polyrrythmique, la grande classe...J'aime tout spécialement les dialogues à la guitare entre Obey et le 2e guitariste, ça fourmille de petites idées...Joyeux Noël !

Chief Dr. Sikiru Ayinde Barrister - Fuji Garbage (LP, Siky Oluyole Records,1988)

 Chief Dr. Sikiru Ayinde Barrister (1948-2010) was one of the leader of the Fuji sound in Nigeria. He build up that sound after the Biafra war, at the end of the seventies. It's a combination of Apala music, Were music (for the muslims) and traditonal yoruba poetry (and proverbs)...It's quiet similar to Juju music, but, for what I know, it's more for the muslim community (because the King barrister was muslim). For the seventies period, I have to say that I prefer Juju... This album was made in 1988 and it sounds really "funky" to my ears...specially the intro with the beat box wich reminds me an Herbie Hancock one...As always, there is one long track with some little variations and accelleration, kind of a polyrythmic work-in progress....The big enigma was for me the title of the album, "Fuji garbage"...Thanks to an anonymous comment, I now know that it was in response for some "garbages" other musicians said on him...He explains in the video...
   
 Chief Dr. Sikiru Ayinde Barrister (1948-2010) était l'un des leaders du son Fuji au Nigeria. Il a participé à sa création après la guerre civile, à la fin des années 70. Le fuji, en gros, c'est un mélange entre l'Apala, la Were music (issue de la communauté musulmane) et la tradition poétique (et des proverbes) Yoruba. Il me semble que la différence avec le Juju tient surtout au fait que le Fuji est destiné aux musulmans (surtout parce que Barrister était musulman), et que les musiciens de ce genre se permettaient moins d'audace dans l'utilisation des instruments modernes et électriques. Du moins pour ce qui concerne les années 70. Cet album, enregistré en 1988, sonne quant à lui, et à mes oreilles, plutôt funky, en particulier l'intro avec une beat box et une ligne de basse qui me rappelle un thème d'Herbie Hancock (mon pote Chylo pense que c'est les J.B's, et vous ?). La grande énigme pour moi était ce titre, Fuji garbage, "Foutaise Fuji" ? Et grâce à un commentaire anonyme, maintenant je sais qu'en fait c'était une réponse, ironique, à certain détracteur du King of Fuji, je le laisse expliquer dans la vidéo plus bas...Si vous êtes intéressé par la genèse de cette musique, je vous conseille d'ailleurs de vous coltiner les 15 vidéos/interviews du maître, c'est assez passionnant et très révélateur de l'imbrication entre la tradition des proverbes et la musique chez les Yorubas...

Cardinal Rex Lawson's & his Mayor's Band of Nigeria - Rex Lawson's victories (LP,Philips,1969)

--> Le highlife a été introduit au Nigeria par le Ghanéen E.T Mensah dans le courant des années cinquante, c'est à lui que l'on doit le son spécifique de la trompette "vibrante" du highlife, un tic qu'on retrouve ici chez le génial Cardinal Rex Lawson . C’est le Nigérian Bobby Benson qui a vraiment popularisé cette musique à partir du début des années soixante, notamment en introduisant une dimension vulgarisatrice et comique qu’il a emprunté aux comédiens des « slapstick-comedies » afro-américains. C'est d'ailleurs en partie pour cette raison que le highlife était écouté par, plus ou moins, toutes les couches de la société nigériane, ce qui était moins le cas au Ghana, d'où la première appellation de "high-life-class music". L’autre aspect particulier du highlife nigérian, et ça n'est pas pour me déplaire même si ce n'est pas le cas sur ce disque, est l’introduction dans son instrumentarium, des tambours d’aisselle (talking drums).
En 1966, la guerre du Biafra éclate, elle dure jusqu'en 1970. Cette guerre, outre les horreurs et le million de morts qu'elle a engendrée, a eu pour conséquence de ralentir sérieusement la production highlife dans la mesure ou de nombreux musiciens de ce genre étaient originaire de cette région. Rex Lawson entre autres. Malgré tout, cette petite merveille a survécu aux années. Si j'en crois la pochette, il a été pressé à Lagos en 1969. Vous pouvez trouver des information complémentaires intéressantes sur Rex Lawson sur l'excellent blog Likembe, notamment un line-up des musiciens qui tournaient avec lui. Je dois remercier pour ce disque mon ami Olumuyiwa Kunnuji, trompettiste des Egypt 80's recruté par Féla dans les années 90, qui me l'a ramené, parmi d'autres merveilles (qui ne tarderont pas à atterrir sur le blog), de son dernier passage à Lagos.

Highlife have been introduced in Nigeria by the ghanean E.T. Mensah at the beggining of the fifties. He invented the one specific gimmick of the trumpet you can hear there on this great LP of the trumpeter Rex Lawson. Highlife was very popular in Nigeria during the seventies thanks to, in big part, Bobby Benson whom popularised it by integrate kind of a "comical" way of playing it. Thanks to him, highlife was listening by all the society, even the poor one, which was not really the case in Ghana where, at the beggining, this music was for the higher class...Besides, its first name was "high-class-life music"...During and after the war of Biafra (1966-70), the popularity of highlife increased, in part, because a lot of its musicians were from this region, an so were some of the recordings studios. Rex Lawson was from Biafra. One of the particularities of nigerian highlife is the introduction of the talking drums, which I'm realy fond of even if you can't here some on this LP. You'll find interesting informations about Rex Lawson, especially a line-up of the musicians he was playing with at the time, on the great Likembe blog. I must say a big thanks to my great friend Olumuyiwa Kunnuji, trumpet player of the Egypt 80's, recruted by Féla during the nineties, whom brought me this album from his last trip to Lagos (between a big bunch a diamonds that you will soon find on the blog or hear on the radio program).

Joe Nez and The Top Six LP (Nigeria-Anodisc-1977)

Joe Nez was a Nigerian singer from the Imo State. He was used to sing in english and in Igbo. It's hard to have informations on him (if you have so let me know)....He was singing highlife during the beginning of the sixties, and then he formed his own band in the mid seventies, named Joe Nez and the Top Six. I found only three album from them in his discography by John Beadle (from Likembe). This one was recorded in 1977 for Anodisc records in Nigeria. A side's got a reggae mood, the two first track of B side are anedoctics ballads. My favourite track of this LP is the last one, "Mona come back", which 's got a perfect soul mood....Unfortunately, Joe Nez died in 1979. A tribute to his work was published in 1988 by the Scantone label.


Joe Nez était un chanteur Nigerian originaire d'Imo Sate. Il a commencé sa carrière dans les années 60 dans le registre du highlife, comme tout le monde à l'époque...Il n'y a pas tellement d'informations le concernant si ce n'est celles que j'ai pu glaner sur sa discographie (ici, que l'on doit à John Beadle du blog Likembe). Dans les années 70, il monte son propre groupe, Joe Nez and The Top Six et sort trois albums avec. Celui-ci est le 2e. La face A est trés "reggae-orientée". Sur la face B, deux ballades plutôt anecdotiques. Par contre, le dernier morceau de l'album, "mona come back" est une grosse tuerie soul....Joe Nez est mort en 1979, le label nigerian Scantone a publié une compilation de son travail en 1988.

If you were around in 2010, I was posting this album form Segun Adewale & Shina Peters. A year later I was doing an edit for the dancefloor ( with my mate Chylo) of one of the track of this album "Oba oyebade lipede". My friends from Hard Fist Label issue it for free download on there soundcloud page...

Great Juju stuff from the end of the seventies. (Thanks to Groovemonzter for the info) Segun Adewale and Shina Peters were young musicians playing with General Prince Adekunle in 1977 when they decided to form their own band, "Sir Shina Adwale & the Superstars International." During the next three years they released nine albums. The album posted here was their sixth. The sound here is really intersting. You'll hear a beat box in the last song, "oba oyebade lipede"  is just amazing.

Excellent album de Juju de la fin des années 70. Segun Adewale et Shina Peters étaient musiciens au sein de l'orchestre de Prince Adekunle, un des maîtres du genre. En 1977 ils montent leur propre groupe et, en trois ans, pondent 9 albums. Celui-ci est le 6e. Le son est plutôt étonnant dans la mesure ou vous pourrez entendre, outre les synthés psychés, une boite à rythme...
