Les Bantous de la Capitale, Music press, LP

The "good" side of lockdown is that I have a little bit more time to work on the blog, normally all links are working again for LP, 33T and 45...And by the way, here's a great Les Bantous de la Capitale LP recorded, I guess, during the 70s. Domingo & Kabako on vocals for one of my favorite bands from Brazzaville. Great rumba album !

Enjoy

African Memories- Congolese Rumba from the 50s (LP, Pathé Marconi)

Beautiful Congolese rumba compilation made by Gilles Sala, a french musician (from the west-indies) & music activist during the sixties, seventies and eighties. His selection is just the perfect one from the end of the fifties, beginning of sixties. Rock a Mambo is the first congolese rumba orchestra I discovered fifteen years ago...Since, there'e not a week without listening the sweet guitar of Nico...
Gilles Sala made this selection for Pathé after a long trip, "retour aux sources", in Africa.

Soul Descarga n°18 - Carte postale sonore : Cotonou-Ségou

You are not a country, Africa, you are a concept. You are not a concept, Africa, you are glimpse of infinity... Georges N'Gal, Ghaneen poet and Diplomat.

Sharing memories, impressions, encounters, smells and colours after
travelling to West Africa, even if only to an infinitesimal part of it
(Benin and Mali) is not an easy thing to do. It is, however, the whole idea
of this program, a kind of musical postcard brought back from a number of
visits to Cotonou, Ouidah, Porto-Novo and Gran Popo in Benin and Bamako and
Segou in Mali.

All the visits were rhythmed by unexpected encounters, some funny and some
dazzling, by conversations and discussions that were trivial, very serious
and some highly alcoholised but almost all totally unlikely.

Of course you will have understood - my visiting card was music. Not any
music but music from a very particular period when Africa was decolonising
its culture, its conscience, its institutions (I know, there's still a lot
to be done) and was looking at itself and found a new identity by
modernising its traditions and folklore after scratching at those of the
Afro-American, Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian diasporas.

I have tried to illustrate this dialogue with unabridged extracts from old
vinyls or live recordings.

The style of the program may surprise some - music and dialogues - but
finally, who cares ?

Congolese Rumba Pieces (45T)

It's been a month now I haven't post something, so today I'll try to balance...
Let's go to Zaïre, ex-Congo Belge and futur R.D.C to hear a few rumba 45 from the great sixteen area....

First one is from the great Franco's (Luambo Makiadi) band, it is not under the name of O.K Jazz, apparently because of licence issues with one of his record company. This EP is beautiful (if you like rumba). The first song is a bossa nova version of "Je t'attends", a famous song of the french singer Charles Aznavour. It's sung by a woman, seems to be Henriette Bora Uzima, if you want to know more about this EP go to Worldservice blog here you'll find a very interresting and informed post (as always...).

The second 45T is credited to Franco & l'O.K Jazz. Marie-Cecile is my favourite, but Marie-Elena's got also a lot of charm, even if she's got a slower mood...Again, check Worldservice post about this 45T to go further.

At the beggining of the sixties, two bands where the leaders of rumba style, Franco & L'Ok Jazz & Grand Kalle & African Jazz, some of the greatest musicians from those groups formed their own band after the mi-sixties. Tabuley Rochereau and Docteur Nico where originally members of the African Jazz. They formed the African Fiesta, before splitting in two groups at the early beggining of the seventies. So here they are, Docteur Nico with his African Fiesta Sukisa, with a great rumba-soukous stuff. I really like his horn section.

And then, Le Seigneur Rochereau & the Orchestre Afrisa (L'International) with a kind of jerk-tribute to Cassisus Clay aka Mohamed Ali recorded in 1972 two years before the legendary fight between Ali and Foreman in Kinshasa. On the B side a nice rumba-soukous.

Two less known bands (for western audience) to finish this post. L'Orchestre Cobantou first, lead and founded by Paul Ebengo aka "Dewayon. He was a great friend of Franco and they learned guitar together while they were teenagers, you 'll find more about there relationship here (at Worldservice). Great rumba stuff.
Last but not least, Serge Batangisa & L'Orchestre Grand Micky whom I have no informations on, not one. It's been recorded in 1970 on the Fiesta label. I really like the work of the voices and the typical guitars of the rumba.

The sixth album of this great congolese band. A band whom has largely participated to the evolution of zairo/congolese music. You can hear them here on a LP recorded in Ghana in 1976 just after a tour in the country.

T.P Orchestre Poly Rythmo & Yehouessi Leopold (33T)
